Maharlikans conduct International Speech contest

ERMITA, MANILA — Professional speaker and author Jesse James Llamado CC CL bested six other competitors in Maharlika’s International Speech contest, February 14, at Casa Bocobo Hotel.

Jesse James also won first place in the Table Topics contest last week.

Digital marketing professional Rojan Mercader TM and entrepreneur Joevel Fernandez CC followed Jesse James as 1st runner-up and 2nd runner-up, respectively.

The International Speech contest is Toastmasters International’s flagship contest, which leads up to the international level every year. Contestants prepare a 5-7-minute inspirational speech, with a multicultural audience in mind.

On March 4, Jesse James and Rojan will represent Maharlika in the Area 92 speech contests at LDS compound in Sampaloc, Manila.

Maharlika holds Table Topics contest

ERMITA, MANILA — Nine young Toastmasters vied for the championship in Maharlika’s club-level Table Topics contest, February 7, at Casa Bocobo Hotel.

Jesse James Llamado CC CL won first place, followed by Chris Herrera TM, then Job Pagsibigan TM. Jesse James and Chris will represent Maharlika in the area-level contest on March 4 in Sampaloc, Manila.

Table Topics is an impromptu speaking exercise developed by Toastmasters International. Speakers pick a random topic which they have to comment on for 1-2 minutes, applying all the basic tools of effective speech delivery.

During the contest, contestants spoke about the topic, “A goal without a deadline is only a wish,” with Daryl Zamora ACB ALB as contest chair.

Other contestants were Amir Acosta CC CL, Kenley Liong CC, Joevel Fernandez CC, Carol Reyes CC, January Martin TM, and Rojan Mercader TM.

Prior to the contest, Ed Fabonan DTM also presented a short talk on acing the Table Topics, as well as the general guidelines when joining speech contests.

Among the club’s guests during the contest were Gerome Campaner ACS, Sasi Casas DTM, Zaldy Co DTM, and several walk-in guests.

Next meeting, February 14, Maharlika will conduct the International Speech contest.

Maharlika celebrates National Arts Month

ERMITA, MANILA — Maharlika Toastmasters Club celebrated the National Arts Month (February) in its January 31 meeting. Led by Daryl Zamora ACB ALB, the meeting included a Table Topics (impromptu speaking) session featuring various controversial artworks throughout Philippine history; Ed Fabonan DTM facilitated the session.

Among the Table Topics speakers were Joevel Fernandez CC, Kenley Liong CC, and guests Jairo Dupio III and Jai Patria.

Rojan Mercader TM delivered her sixth basic speech project, outlining her learnings from the call center industry, while Joevel Fernandez CC gave an advanced speech project in which he lauded his father.

Amir Acosta CC CL served as the general evaluator and was assisted by Joylette Tubigan CTM, who evaluated the Table Topics portion.

Maharlika celebrates Chinese New Year

ERMITA, MANILA — Gong xi fa cai! This was the resounding cheer in Maharlika’s January 24 meeting themed “Chinese New Year,” with Kenley Liong CC leading the session with a tikoy bonanza.

Two Chinese guests — Cherry Lau CC CL and Suzie Xie — also joined the meeting. They shared with the group how they celebrate the lunar new year back home. They said the occasion is so big in China that people are given a two-week vacation to celebrate it (and that’s why they’re able to visit the Philippines today).

During the Table Topics session, facilitated by Chris Herrera TM, impromptu speakers commented on quotes mentioning the various Chinese zodiac animals, from dragons to rabbits to tigers. Among the speakers were Carlo Acosta TM, Carol Reyes TM, and January Martin TM.

Two Toastmasters delivered prepared speeches: Chris, who talked about habits and excellence, and Job Pagsibigan TM who recounted his love-hate relationship with sleep.

Daryl Zamora ACB ALB served as the general evaluator and was assisted by Cherry, who evaluated the Table Topics portion. Liza Abano TM also helped by being the meeting’s timer.

Maharlikans learn Chinese zodiac

ERMITA, MANILA — Tigers, dogs, rabbits, and snakes: all attended Maharlika’s second meeting of the year, January 17. That is, those who were born in years associated with the said animals.

With the theme “Chinese Zodiac,” the meeting was led by Ed Fabonan DTM, who narrated the story of the 12 animals of the Chinese lunar calendar.

Rojan Mercader TM facilitated the Table Topics session. Using quotes from various thinkers, she called several Toastmasters and guests to take part in the impromptu speaking exercise. Among the speakers were Carlo Acosta TM of Molave Toastmasters Club, and guests JC Perez and Celine.

Two speakers delivered prepared speeches: Liza Abano TM who talked about integrity, and Daryl Zamora ACB ALB who recounted his maddening experience with mindfulness apps.

Kenley Liong CC served as the general evaluator and was assisted by Joevel Fernandez CC, who evaluated the Table Topics session. Lee Gano CC evaluated Liza, while Ed evaluated Daryl.

Maharlika holds first meeting of the year

ERMITA, MANILA — Maharlika Toastmasters celebrated the new year with a meeting on “New Beginnings,” January 10, led by Joevel Fernandez CC.

Joevel began by asking the participants what they plan to “stop, begin, and continue” this year. Various answers surfaced — “stop gambling,” “begin saving,” “stop procrastinating” — but all agreed to continue their dedication to the club.

Nicole Uy CC CL took charge of the Table Topics portion, wherein various quotations on change and starting again served as prompts for the impromptu mini-speeches.

The lone prepared speaker, Rojan Mercader TM, recounted her most embarrassing moment. Everyone cringed in sympathy as Rojan described how her former boss drove her home after an accidental, er, inebriation.

Ed Fabonan DTM led the evaluation portion, serving both as general evaluator and Table Topics evaluator. Meanwhile, Nicole evaluated Rojan’s speech, and Daryl Zamora ACB ALB delivered the ah-haha counter’s report and the timer’s report.
